100 Days Of COVID

Whilst watching the news, I found out that today marks 100 days since the first case of COVID-19 in the world, according to the WHO. In just 100 days, this virus has usurped and taken over the entire Earth. In all honesty, it has felt like an eon has passed. Being stuck inside doesn't help keep a sense of time, I guess. The last 100 days have changed how the majority of the human race live life, and now staying away and avoiding contact has become an act of heroism.

As the WHO stated in their inspiring Twitter post today, humankind has always come together to 'face the very thing that would extinguish our light', but now we have been held back, halted from this. In the last 3 weeks of lockdown, my life has taken a sudden, unexpected turn. My contact with my friends has dropped off to almost none. I haven't gone outside (excluding the garden) since lockdown began. Life is becoming increasingly repetitive and boring, and I know that this sentiment is being echoed by people everywhere across the world, from Canada to Australia. Despite this, I will make it through this.

In the last few weeks, I have realised that there are lots of things available to take up the time. I started a course on Bacterial Resistance and Genomics on FutureLearn and my mum has done around 8 courses already to spend the time, my dad has taken an interest in gardening and my brother is avidly practicing on his guitar. Start a Netflix series, get into a new hobby or sport, there are multitudes of things that you could do. If you play a musical instrument, here's your chance to get really good at it - you have a long time to practice now - lately I've been practicing on my drums like a madman trying to get my doubles up to speed. If you have nothing to do, all the free time now on everyones' hands acts as a good time to reflect, to look at everything you have done and how you could be better, or try to make some positive changes to your life (personally, I'm doing at least 30 minutes of exercise everyday to try and get more fit).

This crisis will continue. We will hear that x amount of days has passed since the first case, and x will only get larger and larger. This number should not scare us or make us nervous. Coronavirus has only just begun; most countries' infection curves are yet to peak - it will get worse, there is no denying that. But before that, worrying and being scared will not help the world. Standing united (well, technically, we need to be separate) and working together is the way forward.

Just make sure that you are socially distancing whilst standing united.
