Pushing for the Presidency

Four and a half weeks ago, the 2020 US election took place. Potentially one of the most hotly contested, highly argued about, interesting elections to ever take place, with Trump refusing to leave the White House, proclaiming that the election was illegal - that is, until a week ago, when he announced that if the Electoral College announced Biden's win, then he would leave. Well, that day has come - California certified the results of the election in their state, giving Biden the push that he needed to cross the 270 elector threshold to the White House. But with Trump launching law suits left, right and centre, the next steps are very much unclear.

Over the course of the last month, since the results came out that Biden had won and had enough Electoral College votes to take the presidency, the Trump campaign have attempted to slow down the announcement of the results in any way they can find - slinging around completely baseless accusations about fraud and corruption, opening up law suits against whole states and even more. Even though all of the evidence points to this election being above board, and it is relatively obvious that Biden was the winner, Trump has been compared multiple times to a young child throwing a temper tantrum because he has to give up his favourite toy.

The Trump administration recently launched another law suit against Georgia, which is looking as if it isn't going to be very fruitful. Of the 50 or so legal challenges filed, 30 of them have been dropped already. In a bid to fund his very expensive attempts at trying to save his presidency, he has raised over $207 million. Most of this money will go to funding his political endeavours as well as paying the around $10 million that his law suits have cost him.

On the other hand, President-Elect Joe Biden has been looking at the next steps for the US, speaking out on his plans for when a vaccine gets approved in the US. An announcement made by Mike Pence suggests that an approval may be imminent. Joe Biden has said that he doesn't want to make the vaccine mandatory - potentially attempting to avoid political warfare like what happened with masks over the last year. As well as this, he says that the economical state of the US is "dire" and that urgent action is needed in order to try and halt some of the damage. Since the cases and deaths are still rising, Biden is trying to get the American population to comply with the tougher restrictions he is planning on implementing - such as a period of 100 days in which everyone should wear a mask.

Overall, the US election is still as much of a mess as it was a month ago. In a week, the Electoral College will get all the named Electors to vote. Now that the Electoral College has declared Biden's majority, Trump needs to make good on his promise to leave. Until every one of the legal challenges gets resolved, though, I don't think that Trump will be going anywhere. With Biden treading carefully in a bid to settle in to his new position of power, any moves that Trump will make to try and get back his presidency will happen soon - he only has another month or so before Biden is officially inaugurated, but I guess we will just have to wait and see.
